Day Trip - Chiltern - Albury - Albury Taxis

Fascinating Chiltern

Itinerary - P2P5A

Albury - Chiltern

The historical town of Chiltern with its well preserved buildings has been a popular setting for Australian Films including Disney’s “Ride a Wild Pony”.

Places of interest include the Athenaeum Museum featuring collections from authors Henry Handel Richardson and Wilfred Busse. Memorabilia relating to Sir John “Black Jack” McEwen, a series of paintings by Alfred William Eustace, The First World War honour roll and much more.

Then step into a long gone era of medicine at Dows Pharmacy which has original fittings, products, equipment and records and then take a short walk to look at the oldest Grapevine in the southern hemisphere in the courtyard at the Star Hotel.

If time allows before lunch stroll through the rest of the main street and you will find antique shops, galleries, bric-a-brac, furniture, jewellery, pottery and glassware.

We recommend lunch at Hub 62. It is a family owned business established in December 2015. The 1903 heritage building features a cafe and a gallery space, Elvery Fine Art Gallery. Closed Tuesdays.

Chiltern - Lake View House

The Lake View House is of historically importance as an example of early brick building and as the childhood home of author Henry Handel Richardson built in 1870. Open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays only.

Chiltern - Albury

We head back to Albury via Barnawartha on the old Hume Highway or to Howlong back over the Murray River via the 13 bridges spanning the Murray River flats. Which way would you like to go?
